Dr. Nelson, recently retired from 46 years in the telecommunications industry, higher education leadership and as Affordable Housing Portfolio Manager. Presently, he is President of NELCO ED, LLC, an educational consultancy firm. Throughout his years residing in the City of Birmingham, he has been very active in numerous non profit organizations serving as the former Vice Chair of the Birmingham of Education, Chair of the Alabama Public Charter School Commission, Trustee of Stillman College, President of the Build Up Workforce Development High School, and Treasurer of the YMBC, among other numerous local organizations. Each year, the Alabama Public Charter School Commission awards a $5,000 Nelson-Marshall Excellence in Teaching grant to the top performing Educator in Alabama. He has also served as adjunct professor at several colleges and universities in the greater Birmingham area.
Dr. Nelson earned a doctorate in education policy from Vanderbilt University, Masters in Management from Samford University, Masters in Marketing from UAB and a masters in theology from Emory University.
